Lab Equipment
Raman Spectroscopy
The group is very well equipped for Raman spectroscopy with excitation from the deep UV (244 nm, 257 nm) to the visible to the near IR. See below for a full description of capabilities. Multiwavelength Raman including UV Raman is particularly useful for analysis of carbon samples such as diamond-like carbon (DLC), tetrahedral amorphous carbon, crystalline diamond and various other carbons prepared by techniques such as filtered cathodic arc deposition, plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD), conventional CVD and others. A detailed understanding of the carbon bonding, including the sp2 to sp3 bonded carbon ratio can be obtained. We often work with industry and academic partners interested in deep UV and multiwavelength Raman analyses via either collaboration or consultation. These Raman capabilties are also broadly useful in the analysis of solid state materials, such as semiconductors and wide bandgap insulators.
Powder X-ray Diffraction
The G670 Huber image plate powder diffraction system (see below) is mated to a 12 kW Rigaku RU-200 rotating anode. This combination of a multichannel, high resolution diffractometer with a powerful laboratory-based X-ray source allows for collection of extremely accurate diffraction data on samples a small as 1 microgram in a few minutes. See this paper for some of the details.
Thermoelectric Power
Our lab has pioneered techniques for measurement of the thermolectric power of small samples, both at ambient pressure and at high pressure for pressure tuning experiments. See below for a description of the equipment.
